What is Pilates?
Pilates (pronounced pill-ah-teez) is a unique method of whole body conditioning. This intelligent form of exercise incorporates a balance of stretch and strength training. At the origin of its conception are the abdominal muscles. Core exercises are designed to bring awareness to the torso and to help re-pattern muscular-skeletal imbalances. With a strong, flexible spine and strong flat abs, your body will perform more efficiently. The movements are progressive and fluid with the aid of breath and mental focus. Pilates is for every age and ability. This technique is not only a great form of fitness but a holistic, mind, body and spirit philosophy.

The History of Pilates
Pilates was developed in the 1920s by German-born Joseph H. Pilates. As a sick and frail child, Joseph endured rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever. Determined to overcome his afflictions, he began a quest for good health and fitness. He studied yoga, Zen meditation and the rigorous exercise regimes of the ancient Greeks and Romans. His efforts paid off. By the age of 14, Joseph had become an accomplished skin diver, skier and gymnast. Later he worked as a boxer, circus performer and trained detectives in self-defense. Through his experience he developed great insight into the powerful connection between the mind and the body. Eventually Joseph created his own exercise technique called Contrology, which enhanced this mind/body connection through the use of breath in focused, progressive movements. This program, now known as Pilates, has inspired a legion of followers who continue to share and expand on Joseph’s remarkable creation.
