What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient technique that works towards creating overall balance physically and emotionally. Yoga incorporates stretching, strengthening, and elongating the spine. Correct breathing and relaxation techniques lower blood pressure, increases lung capacity, releases tension which aids overall well being. Yoga helps to calm the mind, bring emotional balance, mental clarity and focus into ones life.
The History of Yoga
Yoga began 5,000 years ago as an eastern philosophy that originated in India. The word, yoga, is derived from Sanskrit, one of the world’s most ancient languages. In its simplicity, yoga means: "a bringing together of the parts to create a union or balance of the body, mind and spirit". Today, the practice of yoga incorporates postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation or relaxation.
Yoga is not a religion, but it can aid in spiritual awareness. The aim is to work towards a harmonious and balanced way of life, where the mind is free of confusion and distress. There are many different forms of yoga deriving from Hatha yoga including Iyengar, Ashtanga and Kundalini. Although all slightly different, each one will feed the soul and fuel the body. Whether for fitness, health, to calm the mind, or to live more meaningfully, yoga is a worthy and enjoyable pursuit.
